Started at about 1.30 pm from Munnar. We had planned to visit Devikulam lake but we were not sure about the exact location and we skipped this place. It is believed that Goddess Sita took bath in this lake. It also requires a special approval from Tata Tea.

Lockhart Tea Estate:

Around 10 km from Munnar on the way to Kumily, we spotted the mind boggling view of the blue hills covered with lush greenery. Spent some relaxing time here, soaked up in the beauty of spectacular views E I E I O.

Here a green there a green everywhere a green....

Kumily:

Barso Re, Megha Megha Barso Re...
Jal Jal Jal Jal Jal Jal Jal Thal Jal Thal...

Wow! rain welcomed us to the Kumily. Reached Jungle palace home stay before dark. We were allotted a ground floor facing forest. From the balcony we could see some sambar deers and wild boar. Really scared to spend the night time there but it was fun :). We asked the owner that any animals may enter the home stay as the forest starts from end of the balcony. They assured us that the animals would not enter the home stay. Periyar National park entrance is less than 300 metre from the place where we stayed.
Next day was our wedding anniversary. Got up at about 4.30 am and stood in queue to buy entrance tickets. They opened the counter at about 6 am. Note the ticket is only for entering the park and car park. It is not guaranteed to get  boating ticket. We have to buy boat ticket inside the park.

The gate opened at about 7 am and all vehicles need to maintain 20 kmph inside the park. Parking place is about 2-3 km inside the park. At one point the vehicles stopped for parking and people started running to buy the tickets which is 500 meters from parking. Need to get the form and fill it up and proceed to the ticket counter. Wow! lucky to get ticket for 1st slot.

Some tips if you are going for boating. Always go early in the morning. While one person is parking the other can run and ask for the form, fill it up and get the ticket. There are 2 forms available one in yellow and another one in white. Yellow form is issued by Periyar forest boat and the white form is issued by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. You can fill any form or both :) and then proceed to counter, ask for the upper desk for the better view.

The boat ride is about 1.5 hours. The ride takes you into the deep area of park. We enjoyed the beauty of lake. We could spot only wild boar, fox, Pied Kingfisher, White-Breasted Kingfisher and other birds. Could not spot any elephants or tigers.

The famous tamil song Nenjinile Nenjinile from the movie Uyire (in Hindi, Jiya Jale from the movie Dil se) and a song Bechainiyan song from the Hindi movie Gupt were shot here.

While returning to car we saw the Giant Squirrel and Langur.

In the evening we spent some time shopping and booked ticket for Kathakali performance at Mudra Kathakali centre. We reached the place 1 hour early and we saw the make up done by the artist. We spoke to the artist, they said for makeup it takes around 3 hours. To get the frill effect in Kathakali dress they use around 50 rice sacks around the hip and they cover with the dress. It was really wonder for us. Started with demonstration with various facial expressions which was so striking and impressive. The power was continuously on and off and one point of time everyone started losing interest including artist. They cut short their demonstration and they played a story of "The son of Nakasura". Had not been for frequent power disruption it would have been more interesting.

The whole trip was loveable and enjoyable.

We booked the ticket to San Francisco (SFO), California through Emirates. It takes about 20 hours of flight and 2 hours of layoff at Dubai International Airport. Emirates has a good entertainment provider and you will get chance to see the wonderful view of the Greenland ice sheet. Ten minutes before landing in SFO, we could see the Golden Gate Bridge from the plane. Wow what a view!

Below are link to the places we visited in California during our trip.

1)San Fransisco

2) Napa Valley

3) Big Sur

4) Mystery Spot

5) Lake Tahoe

6) Sacramento

Tips:

1) For information on applying US visa, check  http://www.immihelp.com/. This is really helpful website.
2) Check date and time on the flight ticket. We have seen people getting confused when the time of flight is after 12 midnight (AM) and have missed the flight.
3) If any of your friends or relatives are flying, you can track the flight live from https://flightaware.com/live/ or search in Google for flight tracker.

Sacramento, Old Sacramento - USA

Sacramento is the capital city of California State.

Do you want to get the glimpse of  the Sacramento history? Then visit Old Sacramento that's the right choice as history still preserved here. The road is made of cobblestone and sidewalk is made of wooden planks. Stroll the sidewalks along the Sacramento River and also along the old rail track. There are many old buildings dated back to gold rush days. A great place to hangout.

Major attractions here is California State Rail Road Museum which exhibits historic trains. Some of the train exhibits are gigantic. Vintage sleeping car train has special stimulation effect with datak datak... sound and shake, which made us to feel real for a moment. The next exhibit had China plates placed on the dining table in car with the different menus. Thought you can taste? No... it is only exhibit. They have a special train for shipping fresh fruits known as "FRUIT GROWERS EXPRESS" with ventilator and refrigerator.

Nowadays life has become so simple that with a single touch you can send the email immediately. But in earlier days letters had to be delivered manually and special train by name US postal car to carry the letters. It had a canvas bag and table which were sorted by city. The museum also showcases a gigantic train that were used even in the snow covered mountain.

The second floor exhibits a varieties of toy train. Kids are sure to enjoy this. We became like kids and thoroughly enjoyed all.

Next to this building, Sacramento History Museum is located which showcase diverse history of Sacramento.

Lake Tahoe, California - USA

One of our friend suggested to visit Lake Tahoe which is 2 hour drive from Roseville, California.

The sky is  blue, so the  lake
with snow capped mountain
fragrance  filled   pine  trees
refreshes our eyes and mind.

Lake Tahoe is located on the border of California and Nevada state. The lake has a crystal clear blue fresh water. It is the second deepest lake in USA and tenth deepest in the world. Below are the list of activities in lake Tahoe:
  • Cruise
  • Hiking in the emerald bay
  • Gondola ride.
On the way to Lake Tahoe we stopped at different places for a beautiful photo shoot. The lake is surrounded by the beautiful mountain filled with pine trees. We smelt the fragrance of pine trees which was refreshing. In winter, mountains are completely covered by snow. We had been to this place during start of the summer, snow had almost melt, still the mountains looked beautiful.

We planned to go in cruise to have a beautiful view of the lake and its surrounding. But the tickets were already booked and only tickets were available for night. We were little disappointed as we had to return home the same evening and won't have chance to go on cruise, even Gondola ride was closed for public till memorial day. Luckily we had option of hiring the speed boat with no option other than driving by us. Initially we were little hesitant and looking at each others face as we had no experience in driving speed boat. We were running short of time and took deep breath and decided to take a chance and go for it. We were given all the necessary instructions on how to go about to Emerald Bay and provided the map for reference. They assured it will be really good and easy to find the way back. Shallow water is one where one can have the beautiful view of rocks.  The map has three different colour indication.
  • light blue green - Very shallow (Boat speed should be less than 5 mph)
  • mild blue and
  • deep blue - water level is deep - better to go faster than 15 mph.
Before we started, crew member explained us how to operate the boat and in case of emergency what need to be done. When turned around and saw the lake, we were astonished. OMG, It looked like Sea. we could hear our heart sound lup tup lup tup... We then request crew member to be with us till the completion of the ride.  He took permission from the office before he accepted to accompany us.
Our super thrilling experience started when we were in middle of the lake. We took turn to drive the boat. But most of the time the crew member was the one who was driving as we had to return in an hour's time. To return within the specified time, he rode the boat at 30 mph.  The cold splash of water  hitting on our face enthused us. Wow! What a moment!

Spotted Eagle falls from Emerald Bay. The different shades of blues, teals, turquoise, greens, and emerald colors in the lake were ravishing. In Emerald bay lies a small island called Fannette Island with the tea house built on it. The stone structure on the island which resembles miniature castle is the "Tea House". This island is accessible only through boat, kayak or canoe. It is closed for public now. It is believed that the queen would travel to this island by boat to have a  tea along with her guests. On the head of the Emerald Bay lies a castle by name Vikingsholm Castle.

We couldn't believe our eyes that we were back on time. It was one of the thrilling experience we had in our life.

Spent some time relaxing near the lake seeing the clear blue corals, the rumbling of the waves and the bubbling froth, all looked heavenly.

Tips:
  • If you are planning to visit the Lake Tahoe, better to book cruise on-line at least a day before so as not to get disappointed to find the tickets not available. Reference site http://www.zephyrcove.com/tahoequeen.aspx.
  • If you are planning to go for Gondola ride make sure to stop at observation desk and have a eye catching view
  • Always have a jacket handy. Weather here may change suddenly.
  • Do not forget to wear a comfy shoe if you are planning to do hiking at Emerald bay.
  • Start early to Lake Tahoe so that you can enjoy to the fullest extent possible.
  • If you are planning to hire a boat and new to driving speed boat, it is not easy task to cover Emerald Bay within an hour. One has to drive at 25-30 mph and should have good knowledge of the direction. People in the front desk say that we can cover it in an hour. But it is only for the experienced people and not for novice.
  • The speed boat may work out cheap if you are in group of 7 or 8 members.

We took Caltrain from San Jose to San Francisco and reached at 10:15 am. From the station we took muni bus (a bus which is operated similar to tram) to reach Union Square. Union Square is the place where major sight seeing tour company are located and operate. There are many sightseeing hop on hop off  tour operators and each of them charge different rate. We negotiated with most of them and finally decided to go with Big Bus company which operates bus for every 30 min. It would be good to opt for day tour in the summer. Since the sun sets at about 8 pm. We were given a tour map and ear phone. The bus takes you around 15 points of interest and you can hop-off at any place and take your time hop-on another bus from the nearest point. We were lucky to get seat at the top floor of the open air top double Decker bus.The bus  is provided with  recorded comments for each place of interest.

Tips:
  • Always plan ahead where to hop-off.
  • Try getting seat in the open air top during summer.
  • While sitting and enjoying the view from the open top ensure that you have a chin strap caps if needed.

We had the view of Asian Art Museum, Civic centre, Alama square, California Academy of Science from the bus ;). We planned to hop off at only 5 of the places, as we started late and had only 6 hours to see all the place. Our first destination was Golden Gate Bridge.

Golden Gate Bridge:
The suspension bridge is the icon of San Francisco. Travelling across the Golden Gate bridge in open air made us exciting and enthralling. Wondering if the bridge is made of gold or have golden colour? hmmm.. no, this is painted with orange colour to add beauty and augment the bridge during fog. One can walk or cycle through the bridge. From vista point one can enjoy the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay and Alcatrez island.

Palace of Fine Arts:
When we arrived here we wondered whether we transformed to Greek and Rome. People urging to go for Greek can quench their thirst to some extent by visiting here. A beautiful Romanesque architecture, its colonnade, the artificial lagoon with some birds  makes this place a very lovey-dovey. A clear blue sky makes this architecture building add beauty for capturing the photos. Took a walk in the chill grass and relaxed so much here. A must visit place in San Francisco.

Lombard Street:
Got down at Lombard street-2 and walked a few meters in the steep road and reached the crookedest street. It has about 8 curves and it looks good. From there we walked all the way to Fisherman Wharf and Pier 39. A place where the street performers are entertaining throughout the day. A place for buying shopping.
The next without hop on views are the beautiful building of San Francisco.

Tips:
If you are starting from Pier 39, you can get the tickets with various offer, always look for the best rate available and choose the best one. While coming out of San Francisco International Airport go to the information centre and collect city tour guide and other guides. Please go through the books, it may have some offers or discount Ad.

Lepakshi- Lovable Architecture and mural paintings in Vijayanagar Style

Planning to go one day weekend trip near Bangalore oh... near Bengaluru? Trip to Lepakshi would be good choice if people are interested in archaeology. It is about 2 hours drive and approximately 120 km from Bangalore. We planned trip just a night before. Hence, we were not ready for early morning drive. But managed to start by 8:30 am, took the Bangalore-Hydrabad highway and we were in Lepakshi by 10:30 am. At about 60 km, one can find Kamat Upahaar for breakfast. The roads are good except for 3 km stretch before Lepakshi where road work was in progress. There are 2 toll plazas, one near Devanahalli airport and the other one before the check post at Bagepalli. Single trip it costs Rs. 75, for onward and return it is Rs. 115. Near check post take left turn to Lepakshi.

A great grand Nandi bull made with a single granite stone in couchant posture welcomes you with beautiful ornaments on your right side. This is on the main road. It is looking towards the Nagalinga located behind the Veerabhadra temple. We spent few minutes photographing the gigantic Nandi.

On the left side, Veerabhadhra temple is located 200 meters from Nandi. A rich architecture speaks a lot about the temple. The main deity is Veerabhadra Swamy. It is said that, Veerabhadra swamy emerged as a swayambu murthi  around 1000 years ago. It is said that Virupanna who was the finance minister during the Vijayanagar period had a son whose name is Veerabhadra. At the early age, Veerabhadra could not speak. Virupanna came here and prayed for one mandala (48 days). With the blessings of Veerabhadra swamy, Virupanna's  son got his speech. So Virupanna established this temple with the main deity as Veerabhadra swamy in the year 1538.

There are 3 shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Veerabhadra. The temple symbolise that Shiva and Hari are one and the same. In Tamil there is a popular saying "Hariyum Shivavum onnu, Ariyadavaa vayile mannu". A pun on the song by Pithukuli Murugadas depicting this in Tamil language as "Hari Shiva aanganume, arisi vaanganume". This sayings and songs goes well for this temple.

 Balancing on 1 side

Inside the temple near to Goddess Parvati, a cave like structure takes you inside a room where there are beautiful mural painting on the ceilings. Most of the paintings are damaged. So anybody planning to visit please look at the ceiling with the help of torch.

The sculptors are wondrous to our eyes. Totally engaged in the beauty of this marvelous sculpture. After this we proceeded towards Madakshira fort which is about 45 km and takes approximately 1 hour to reach. Plan early to visit this place. Park your car in safe place and start trekking for 1-2 hours (as per locals) to reach the fort. As it was already 4 pm and had to return, we did not visit the fort.

Madakshira Fort as seen from main road

Suggestions:
1. Take home-made food for Lunch if you are going to spent the whole day here. Have a plenty of water as it is very hot now.

2. Suggestions to club with other places if you start early hours.

    a) For bird watchers, you can visit painted stork. You can easily spot the  place as there is a statue of painted stork on the way to Lepakshi. As we are bird lovers we enquired one of the villager about the birds. The villager replied that there is no bird at present and it is expected by January or February. If anybody planning to visit during these months try clubbing Lepakshi along with Painted stork.
        or
   b) You can club the visit to Lepakshi by visiting Madakshira fort or Penukonda fort if you start at early hours.
         or
   c) Lepakshi and Nandi hills.

This time around Mulbagal area, a small town in Kolar district, approximately 110 km from Bengaluru. It was power packed divine experience.

Started at 8 am in the morning from Bengaluru and reached Kurudumale at 10:15 am. There are two toll plazas. The first one is Rs.24 for for multiple journey and the other one is Rs.97/- in the Lance Highway road for multiple journey.

There are some good hotels to have breakfast like Woodys and Vasudeva Adigas at the right side of the road which is approximately 60 km from Bangalore. The road is good till Mulbagal town and from Mulbagal to Kurudumale the road is not good.

The drive from Hosekote to Bangalore with the beautiful corn field  on the either side, the chirping sound of the birds makes you to fall in love while you drive.

Kurudumale/Koodumale

Maha Ganapathi Temple:

This place is famous for Maha Ganapathi and Someshwara temple. As per the local people here it is said that according to the legend the trimurthis namely Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara came together and installed the Saligrama of Maha Ganesha for destroying the demon Tripurasura during the satya yuga. Hence this place was known as Koodumale. Koodu means together in Kannada. Over the period of time the name has changed to Kurudumale. It is also said that in tretha yuga Lord Rama worshipped here and in the dwapara yuga Lord Krishna, Pandavas also worshipped here. It is in kaliyuga the king Krishnadevaraya built the temple. One can imagine how much power this Saligrama Ganesha has! Sure, we felt some vibration.

Temple timings: 7 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm.

On the same street, opposite to this temple lies the Someswara temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Someswara Temple:

Someswara temple is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Here the Lingeswara is gracing the devotees. The temple was built by the duo father and son namely Amarashilpi Jakanachari and his son Dakanachari during the period of Chola Dynasty. This is older than the Maha Ganapathi temple. It is said that when Jakanachari had gone out for few days, his son who was a small boy came in search of his father, saw the unfinished temple and completed it in three days and nights. One can easily differentiate the temple built by the father and son duo. This Shivalinga was installed by Koundanya Maharshi. The other deities are Belur Channeskeshava with Bhoodevi and Sridevi, Dakshina Murthy and Kalabhairavar along with Lingam. The temple built by son is where Shamadaambaal is gracing her devotees. Shamey means forgiving in Kannada. The Goddess has forgiven even the fierce demon. Hence the name Shamadaambaal.

Temple timing: 8 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm.

Purchased some vegetables in the Mulbagal Bazaar and headed to Veera Anjaneya swamy temple.

Mulbagal Veera Anjaneya Swamy Temple:

It is said that the Lord Anjaneya idol was installed by Pandavas dated back to approx. 5300 years ago. And it is said that Arjuna had the Veera Anjaneya symbol in his flag. Inside the temple premises lies Lord Balaji. This temple is situated near Mulbagal bus stand. When searched in the Google map, it gives the location of Panchamukhi Anjaneya which is near Mulbagal Bazaar.

We had the darshan of Pallikonda Ranganathan Swamy Perumal (Sleeping posture) situated outside this Anjaneya temple within the complex.

Temple timings: 7 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 7 pm.

Rest room facilities are available outside this temple compound.

Virupakshi Temple:

About 4 km from Mulbaghal town lies a beautiful temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Virupakeswara. As per the priest, small Linga in the temple would change the colour thrice a day. Lingam colour will be Red in the morning, honey colour in the afternoon and black in the night.

The other deities of this temple are Lord Venugopalaswamy, Goddess Durgaambaal who is gracing the devotees in the sitting posture with leg on either side of the Lion.

Ramalingeswara Temple:

Around 8 km from Virupaakshi temple lies the beautiful Ramalingeswara temple. It is said that Lord Rama engaged in war with his twin sons Lava and Kusha. It is a great sin to start war with the lads, Lord Rama approched sage Valmiki for cleansing his sin. Valmiki suggest to install Lingam to get out of the sin. After Rama installed Lakshmana, Bharata and Satrugana also followed.

This temple was built during Chola dynasty. The Lava Kusha hills with Seetha matha temple on the top as a backdrop add beauty to this Temple.

The Ashtadikpalas, Rulers of Eight Directions - Click here for more details.

Lava Kusha hill:

Locals believe that Lava and Kusha were born in here. Hence the name Lava Kusha Betta (hill). One has to climb up the hill to experience Uttara Kandam Ramayana. The trekking to the hill takes us to the beauty of the surrounding rocks. It seems to us that the rock has been beautifully arranged in some order by the people. It is said that after the washerman doubts Sita's chastity, Rama sends her to the Valmiki Ashram. The local say that Valmiki stayed here, was looking after Sita and Lava and Kusha were born in this hermitage. People also believe that Sita was weeping after overlooking the war between Lord Rama and his sons Lava, Kusha. Even today one could find where Sita had washed her clothes. It took nearly an hour to climb up and down the hill. When we reached Sita Matha temple it was closed, later we came to know that one can approach nearby Ramalingeswara priest to open the temple.

Near to Ramalingeswara temple lies Sarada Devi Temple. Opposite to this temple is the Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sharada Peetham. As we were already late, we did not visit the temple and returned to Bengaluru.

Madurai - Thoonga Nagaram (the city that never sleeps)

On Sunday we were listening to some of the 80's hits Tamil songs. The famous song from Rajini's movie "then madurai vaigai nadhi dhinam pAdum thamizh pAttu " was telecasted. While we were thoroughly enjoying the song something struck the mind hmmm... we had not blogged about the famous Madurai. So thought that the 50th post should be Madurai.

Last month we had been to Madurai. Wow what a lovely place? If you question what is it famous for? Everyone will tell immediately that Meenakshi Amman temple. We have heard  "Madurai Arasalum Meenakshi" a song from the Tamil movie Thirumalai Thenkumari. Apart from the famous Meenakshi temple it has got other treasures also. The famous Astanga vimanam in Koodal Azhagar temple, Azhagar Koil, Vandiyoor Teppakulam (tank), Tirumalai Nayak Mahal, two Arupadai veedu (abode of Lord Muruga) namely Tiruparankundram and Pazhamudir Cholai etc. Last but not the least Madurai is also famous for its Jasmine flowers. In olden days Madurai was famous for Sangam Vaithu Tamil Valartha Madurai.

This blog is all about Meenakshi Amman Temple. More of Madurai and near by temples will be posted in our upcoming blog.

Meenakshi Sundereswar Temple:

A temple dedicated to Fish shaped eye deity Goddess Meenakshi. This temple is located on the bank of the river Vaigai.

History: Once there was a Pandya king by name Malayadwaja Pandya who was ruling Madurai. His wife name was Kanchanamalai. They were childless for many years. So they performed the Putra Kameshti Yagna. Goddess Parvathi emerged from the Yagna with 3 breasts. The voice from the heaven told that the third breast will disappear as soon as she sees her better half. They named her Tadaatakai and she was trained in all Sastras, she became princess and ruled the kingdom. Goddess Meenakshi came to Kailash and after seeing Lord Shiva her third breast disappeared. When marriage was fixed, Lord Kallazhagar was asked to come and give Goddess Meenakshi as kannika dhanam to Lord Sundareswar (Shiva). Lord Shiva's servant Gundhodhara had the large feast. He was so thirsty that all the water got over. Seeing this Lord Shiva told Gundodhara "Vai kai" meaning keep the hand on the land. Immediately water splashed and quenched the thirst of  Gundhodhara. So the river was called Vaigai. Kallazhagar was not able to come to the marriage as there was a flood. During an auspicious hours the marriage took place with the help of another Koodalazhagar Perumal. Hearing that the marriage took place he felt insulted and returns back to Azhagar koil.

The above said story is celebrated as a Chithirai thiruvizha (festival) held in the month of April to May. Lakhs of devotees come here to witness the same.

Sculpture, Golden Lotus Tank, Majestic Mukurni Ganesha, Velli ambalam, Thousand pillars hall all add beauty to this temple. The towers are adorned with intricate details and beautiful sculptures. The North tower is called as Mottai Gopuram (bare tower), as most part of the tower does not have sculptures. It is said that all the towers of Meenakshi Temple was built overnight by the Bhutaganas and finally when the north tower was being built it became morning. So they left this tower incomplete.

Mukurni Pillayar (Lord Ganesha):

Three ‘kurunni’ (an unit of measurement) of grains are used to make big ‘modakam’ (a dish made of rice flour) as an offering to this Ganesha. Hence the name ‘Mukkuruni Pillaiyar’.

Goddess Meenakshi:

Smiling Goddess welcomes all devotees to Madurai. She is the avatar of Goddess Parvati.

Velli Ambalam:

While entering the Sundareswar Swamy's sannidhi (sanctum) please lookout for the beautiful dancing Lord Nataraja on the right side of the sannidhi. You could see some difference from rest of the Nataraja found in other places. What is it? This is the only place where Lord Nataraja has his right leg lifted instead of the usual left leg. It is said that the Pandhya king once wanted to learn the dance. So he appointed a teacher and started learning dance. While practicing he felt pain and thought that even for Lord Nataraja posing with left leg raised will make tiresome. So he requested Lord Nataraja to change the position of his leg. On seeing his pure devotion Lord Nataraja changed his posture.

Outside the Sundareswar sanctum one could find Goddess Saraswathi, Durgai, Lord Dakshinamoorthy, etc.

To the both sides of Goddess Durgai, there are elephant sculptures. It is said that this elephant ate the Sugarcane? Hmm... interesting story.

The story goes like this. Once the Pandhya King heard about  Ellam valla Siddhar who was performing various miracles in the city. He was summoned by the king to the palace, but the Siddhar (saint) refused. So the king went to the temple and asked the Siddhar to prove his extraordinary powers. He asked him to make this stone elephant to eat the sugarcane. To his surprise the elephant came to life and ate the sugarcane. Not only this, the elephant also snatched the king's necklace. The king immediately fell at Siddhar's feet and ask for apology. Even now the event is celebrated every year. The event is planned to be held on 15th January 2015 (1st day of Tamil month Thai). Make sure to witness the same if you are planning to visit Madurai at this time.

Mystic vibration at Thiruparankundram:

This place is one of the arupadai veedu (6 abodes) of Lord Muruga. "Thiruparankunrathil nee sirithaal Muruga Thiruthani malai meedu ethirollikum" (Lord Muruga, your laughter in Thiruparankundram will be echoed on the hills of Thiruthani). A wonderful lyrics and song from the Tamil movie Kandhan Karunai. Do you know where Lord Muruga married Deivanai? It is at this Tiruparankundram. Lord Muruga along with his consorts Deivanai and Valli,  Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Parvati are gracing the devotees. They all are beautifully carved out of the rock on the hill.

People who wants to have a  closer darshan of the deity can go for special ticket.

Vandiyoor Mariamman Temple & Teppakulam: Main deity Goddess Mariamman. When we went there was not many people around. So, we could have peaceful darshan. The other deity is Goddess Pechiamman.

Opposite to this temple lies Vandiyoor Teppakulam. Teppakulam is nothing but temple pond. This is one of the symbol of Madurai. There are motor boat and pedal boat rides available for public. Price is affordable. Float festival is celebrated in Thaipusam and this place will be illuminated by light.

Koodal Azhagar Perumal Temple:

Temple Timings: 5:30 am to 12 noon and  4 pm to 9 pm

This lovely temple is one of the 108 Divya Deshams dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This is located near by Periyar Bus stand and Madurai Railway station. As mentioned in our previous post titled Madurai - Thoonga Nagaram (the city that never sleeps), when marriage was fixed between Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswar, Lord Kallazhagar was asked to come and give as kannika dhanam. But was not able to come to the marriage as there was a flood. Hence, during an auspicious hours the marriage took place with the help of Koodal Azhagar Perumal.

Koodal Azhagar Perumal is in the gigantic seating posture along with Sridevi and Boodevi. If you want to have a closer view of the deities then buy ₹ 5 ticket. The unique feature of this temple is Ashtaanga Vimanam (tower above the Sanctum sanctorum in a Hindu temple). The other one is at ThiruKostiyur. The sanctum sanctorums are seen one above the another. Don't forget to have darshan of Ashtanga vimanam. Theppotsava festival (need to buy ticket for this) is done on the day of Maasi magam (Feburary - March) .

In Ashtanga vimanam, Lord Surya Narayanan is in standing pose at the first tier and at the second tier Lord Ksheerabdir Perumal is in the reclining pose. There are beautiful wall paintings inside the Ashtanga vimanam.

The speciality of this temple is that the Lord is seen in different posture (sitting , standing and sleeping) under one vimanam while in other Divyadesham we see either sitting, standing or sleeping posture.

Here Maduravalli thayar is in Padmasana (sitting) posture and she is said to be Padhi Thanda Patni (one who does not leave the confinesof the her sanctum).

Nearer to this temple liesImmayil Nammai TharuvarTemple.

Immayil Nammai Tharuvaar Temple:

Lord Shiva  reliefs  the sin done by his devotees in this birth itself. One need not wait for the another birth to get rid of the sins. Hence the name Inmayil Nammai Tharuvaar.

Note:
During the month of Margazhi (December - January) it is opened and closed earlier than the time mentioned above. It would be better to get temple timing details before you plan for the visit.

Divine secret for liberation unveiled @Thirukoshtiyur

Thirukostiyur (one of the 108 DivyaDesham):

Temple Timings: Monday to Friday: 6.30 am - 12.30 pm and 3.45 pm - 7.30 pm
                             Saturday and Sunday: 6.30 am -1 pm and 3.45 - 7.45 pm

Do you know a place where the sacred mantra "Om Namo Narayana" was revealed? It is here at this Thirukoshtiyur which is around 70 km from Madurai.

Ramanujar said to be the incarnation of Sri Adishesha, was born in Sriperumbudur. He was doing Kainkaryam (service) to Ranganathan perumal at Srirangam. In his dream Sri Ranganathar appears and ask Ramanujar to go and learn the sacred mantra from Thirukoshtiyur Nambigal (who has the secret sacred mantra). It is his duty to spread this mantra to everyone to liberate all from the rebirth. Ramanujar travelled to Tirukoshtiyur to see Sri Thirukoshtiyur Nambigal to learn. At the doorstep Ramanujar said  "I have come". Thirukostiyur Nambigal tells him to come again later. This happened for 17 times. Finally at the 18th time when Ramanujar said "Adiyen dasan Ramanujar Vanduirukken". "Adiyen dasan" in Tamil means "your servant", generally referred to them-self when speaking to Elders/Swami/Guru. "I" presumably signifies the ego. After hearing this, Sri Nambigal taught the sacred mantra "Om Namo Narayana" in the Lakshmi Narayana sanctum. He told that this mantra is usually taught only to the first son in the family. But he would teach Ramanujar on one condition that this mantra should not be revealed to anyone. If this is revealed, Ramanujar will go to hell.
After learning the mantra, Ramanujar goes to the top tier of the temple sanctum, calls all the villagers and tells the secret. Sri Nambigal gets angry on hearing this and tells Ramanuja is Gurudhroyi (traitor of the master) and would go to hell. For this Sri Ramanujar falls at the feet and says "Adiyen" is ready to go to hell, but not the people who heard the secret from him. Sri Nambigal realised how large hearted Ramanujar is, blessed him and gives the title "Emperumaanaar".

Moral of this is, leave your ego and be humble.

Sri Thirukoshtiyur Nambigal House

The fourth tier of the Sanctum tower is Bhoologa Kannan in the dancing pose. The third one is as in Thirupaarkadal sayanam (reclining pose), the second one is as in Indralokham (standing pose) and the first one is as Vaikunda Paramapadanaathan thirukolam (seating pose). Inside the sanctum lies the beautiful art that are about 1000 years old. One has to climb the stairs to view first two tiers.

Soumya Narayana Perumal along with his consorts Bhoomi, Neeladevi is gracing the devotes in the reclining pose on the serpent Adiseshan. This is Prathana Sthalam, devotees could ask the priest for the lamp which they could take home and do pooja to overcome any problem/issue in their life. Once their wishes are fulfilled they have to return the lamp to the temple.

The interesting legend is that the Trimurthis (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) decided in this spot as how to kill the demon Hiranya Kashipu. Kadamba Maharshi gave this place to Trimurthis. Trimurthis asked Kadamba Maharshi what he wanted in return for his favour, for which he replied that he needed the Perumal that was being worshiped by Indra. Here the utsavar (festival deity) is made of silver.

Outside the temple we went and saw the Nambigal stone house. Around 5 km from Thirukoshtiyur, a place by name Pattamangalam is located where Dakshinamoorthy is facing east. We had to skip this place as we had already planned our visit to other temples. Traveller plan for this if you find time.

         (Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha
Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryeshu Sarvada.)

Whenever we do anything we start with the invocation of Lord Ganesha and get his blessings. He is the remover off all the obstacles.

Around 70 km from Madurai lies a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The gigantic Ganesha in Silver Kavacham (shield) with a sparkling thiruneeru (scared ash on the forehead) is glittering in light from the surrounding oil lamps. He is called Karpaga Vinayakar here. Why the name Karpaga? Like Kalpavrusha trees, he too grants wealth to all his devotees.  Kalpavrusha is  a divine tree which grants whatever the person desire.

Very interesting facts about this temple are:
  • Here Ganesha is with two hands while in many other places he appears with 4 hands or more.
  • Ganesha is facing North here. It is the direction of Lord Kubera (God of Wealth) and he grants wealth to his devotees.
  • He is also a Valampuri Vinayaka (his trunks is curled towards the right).

Travel Tips:

When you visit this place, please find time to visit the nearby temple at Kundrakudi where his brother Karthikeya is gracing.

Thirumeyyam Fort:

This fort is located in the district of Pudukottai approximately 90 km from Madurai.

History:

"Sethupati Vijaya Raghunatha Thevan (1673-1708) of Ramanathapuram, popularly know as Kilavan Sethupati, built this fort on and around the rock at Tirumayam in the year 1687. Later the fort was handed over to his brother-in law Raghunatha Raya Tondaiman.

The fort originally said to have been a "ring fort with seven concentric walls has only four surviving now. The construction of the fort is of inferior quality as small blocks of stones were used along with bricks for the building of the fortification." - as put up at the entrance of Thirumeyyam fort .

At the base of the Thirumeyyam or Thirumayam fort, there are twin temples.
  • Sathyagiriswar Temple (Shiva Temple)
  • Satyamurthy Perumal Temple (Vishnu Temple)

Sathyagiriswar Temple: On the hill slope lies the 7th Century temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Venuvaneswari. Tamilnadu's highest Lingothbavar is seen in this temple, opposite to the Lord Shiva sanctum

This is one among the 108  Divya Deshams, the 7th Century Pallavar reign temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main deity Satyamurthy Perumal is in the reclining pose on Adishesha (the king of all Nagas, serpent deities).
